A Sunday Treat

Sunday O Sunday! How I wish it was everyday. I reluctantly open my eyes, the clock strikes eleven and the Sun shines the brightest. I wouldn't worry waking early and hitting the treadmill. All I have to worry is burning the extra calories eating ice cream yet I merrily relax. That's my perfect Sunday Treat.

A dive into the sea waters

In the middle of Great Barrier Reef, the beautiful corals in South Pacific Ocean, I was screaming and trying to float wearing the life jacket after I fell from a terrific banana boat ride. The waves were so mighty that the currents pulled me in the direction opposite. Helpless, I was shouting for help and the salt water found a passage down my throat. The team that ran the water sports was angry discovering the fact that none of us on the boat could swim.

"You guys can't even swim and wanna try adventures!!!" the captain of the boat, yelled at us.

A week later, I enrolled into the swimming classes but still feared taking a dip into the pool. My batch mates were kind enough to teach me each stroke and imbibe "I can do it" attitude and we practiced every day. Soon, my fear begun to vanish and I loved to dive into the water, relax whilst floating.

Come, let's hop on to the surf board and shoo off the fear.

Height of a mountain and depth of a sea

Ever fallen on the street glaring at the limitless sky? When we stand up wounded, we regret if we had walked observing the street, we wouldn't have fallen.

We ambitious gogetters always aim to achieve dreams and work hard day and night. We forget the small things that fetch happiness into our lives. How many of us are truly contended and happy with what we have? The answer to this question is hard to say. We climb the mountain of achievements and someday we fall into the ocean.

My father taught me this secret to happiness; to be satisfied with what you have than brooding over things we don't have... and this has been the major lesson I have learnt.

A family tree of engineers

Most of my cousins are engineers. If I scribble a family tree with my ancestors and name their professions, most are either engineers or teachers. I have a high respect to the teachers but I wasn't inclined or fascinated to chose teaching as a profession and thus chose to be an engineer. My father and uncles are also engineers in the field of electrical, automobile, civil and mechanical but I am a computer engineer as it has been trending today. My cousins and friends work at a software company. Apart from software, there are hardware, network, design engineers. With vivid specializations, the engineering stream has umpteen branches.

The family genetics passes on to the generations, you see!

Softwareentwicklung

Softwareentwicklung, I read aloud without understanding what it meant when I was thirteen year old holding my father's friend's business card. Uncle, as I addressed him with great respect since he was on a vacation to India from Germany and appeared a German. I was struggling to follow his English accent and felt as though I met a celebrity who still remembered his good old friend after having lost contact and spending more than a decade in the Deutschland.

"Uncle, what does soft-wa-reeen-twik-lung, mean? I have never heard that before."

"It means Software Engineer in German."

He was an Electrical Engineer by education but Softwareentwicklung by profession employed in Nuremberg in 1990's. He explained how the life is different from here and his supper would end by 6.30 in the evening. Having worked on the computers throughout the day, he looked gigantic measuring beyond 6 feet! He drove to work on his convertible BMW. The photographs from Germany looked fascinating and it is a home to the world class automobiles: Audi, Mercedez, BMW, to name a few. He bid a good-bye the next day and wrote a letter enclosing six Deustche Mark coins that are an addendum to my numismatics collection.

Whenever I look at the coins from the distant land, it reminds me how I admired the software job during the teens and glad that I am a Softwareentwicklung, its been close to a decade now.

The Penguins Parade

I was less than ten year old when my attention was dragged by the huge flightless species called Penguins. It was during my parents visit to their acquaintance, the little ones were playing with the toy which would come down all the way from the hill and the plateau looked like roller coaster rails.

"What is this peculiar toy called?"

"Its the tenguin", said the little one who was keying it.

"Who got it for you?"

"My uncle brought it all the way from America in flight!"

I questioned my father, why none of the zoos at Mysore or Bangalore did not own them and I had faint memories of never seeing it. He convinced me that they delve in the colder regions like Arctic region or Antarctica. Penguin was a bird which could never fly though it had wings. It would swim in the waters with the long wings and preyed on the fish. It had a rich navy blue fur mistaken to be black. They female penguins would dive into the oceans in search of food and come back home with their community members during the dusk whilst the male penguins would guard home.

I was eagerly waiting for this sophisticated toy to arrive home but it never did. But I am blessed to watch them dive into the Pacific Ocean and bring home the food holding tight in their beak, huffing and puffing after a tiring swim making stone cracking squawk; in a disciplined queue.

Thanks to the Australia and New Zealand government who has strictly undertaken the preventive measures to protect these species that the penguin hunting has been banned for a years now or they would have been extinct like the African Dodo.

I have signed up the writing challenges for Noviembre. Every time I signed up, I would stop midway though I had uploaded the eye catchy logos on the scroll bar. Happy birthday, my old man

"Next week is my birthday and remember to wish me", "Where is my present on my special day", my old man would interrogate a week prior.

He was always excited to celebrate his birthday. It's the same enthusiasm I see in the kids pestering their parents to celebrate bringing large cake and gifts. Though he grew an year older, he was always young and energetic. The repeated memorandum prompted my mother and me would giggle telling him that he was behaving like a five year old kid and that would upset him, "so what? Think what you like!"

On his special day, I would wish him during the midnight and in return, I was given a chocolate. He ensured that the celebration was a secret otherwise his friends would demand him a treat causing a huge hole in his pocket.

This time, there has been no memorandum from him unlike yester years but I am still the first one to be reminded and wish him during the midnight. There have been times, I had forgotten to wish inspite of umpteen reminders at times and it saddened him.

Even if there is no reminder here after, I shall be the first to greet you and relish the chocolate.

No more to pen.

Miss you

A decade of blogging

On this auspicious day, my dearest blog completes a decade. Not just a journal but a true friend who has been with me through thick and thin. There were times when I would sit late night and fill up the blank pages and at times I felt like not writing a single word. As I count the total posts, the outnumbered drafts lying with one liners eagerly are awaiting to be released and I pledge to publish them.

While I look at the first two posts I penned ten years ago, it seems so amateur and childish. Thank you for being such a wonderful mate and hope to continue the friendship forever.

It has been a delight to meet wonderful people via this stupendous platform. It's not one or two, there are many who painstakingly read, commented and complimented. Blogger meets, contests, blog sale, book tours and pestering friends to click the Adsense even if the post did not make any sense.

If you have a minute or two, do visit and say "Happy Birthday to you".

P.S. Loyalty with Blogger continues...

A dive into the golden hill

Sundays are happy days. As a brat, I would wait the whole week to watch my favorite cartoon show, Walt Disney's Duck Tales, on DoorDarshan channel. I would wake up early, brush my teeth, drink horlicks and sit right in front of the Television at 10 AM. Uncle Scoorge, the elder Duck was and is favorite character. He was a rich man whose nephews came in to stay with him. Though a strict uncle, he was, he was very amicable and jovial person. The spectacle glasses he wore always appeared as though they would slip off his nose if he looked down. The pride with which he walked as a majesty highness is adorable. The most unforgettable moment of the show was when Uncle Scoorge would get into the secret door which had uncountable gold coins and seemed to be a Himalayas made out of yellow metal and he would dive into it. 😀 How I was he was "my" Uncle too in reality and everyday would've been a Sunday, in my life.

Given a chance, I would spend a day with Uncle Scoorge, I would carefully ask for his advise on how to become Ms Billionarie and safeguard it. It's not only important to save the monies but it is equally important to splurge on luxury. I would definite make Uncle dine along in the posh restaurants and dive into the sea of waters. I shall also acknowledge him, how much I adored him ever since I was a child and how did he manage those naughty grandnephews.

Last but not the least, I will ask his permission to dive into his golden hill.

McCain's Crispy snacks

I am a foodie and I don't regret confessing so. While I love to eat all varieties of food in my vegetarian diet, I worry I shouldn't gain fat and cholesterol which cause obesity and health hazard. I have abstained from eating rich oily food and potatoes. It's a taboo that the potatoes cause weight gain, so on and so forth.

Most fast food restaurants including McDonald and KFC are popular among the kids and teens for the french fries and potato wedges. It worries me what kinda oil they use while frying these high calorific food and have stayed away from fast food restaurants for a long time now.

It is hard to resist the temptations and you can't ignore the fried food 365 days. McCain India provides a wide range of lip smacking ready to cook and eat products. The products are cholesterol and trans-fat free and pre-cooked in vegetable oil. They offer frozen packed food such as French Fries, Smiles, Potato Nuggets, Super Wedges, Veggies Burger Patties, Aloo tikki, Cheese and Jalapeño, Potato Cheese Shotz.

It is interesting to learn, that, potato contain 45%  of daily value for Vitamin C. It's also used a breakfast for Day 2 of the popular GM Diet.

I would love to prepare the Potato Wedges while at home and it is the easiest snack that I could without following any instructions.

1. Fry the potatoes in a pan containing oil
2. Add a pinch of salt
3. Serve with Cheese Dip.

I would also enjoy preparing the Burger using the Veggie Burger Patty.

Ingredients
1. Sliced bun
2. Chopped lettuce leaf
3. Sliced tomatoes ( one tomato)
4. Sliced onions ( one onion)
5. McCain veggie patty
6. Curd Sour sauce if you're vegetarian

How to prepare:
1. Fry the veggie patty on a non stick pan
2. Add the stuffings in between the sliced bun : onions, white sauce, tomatoes and the patty.

Your burger is ready.

I enjoy the evening snacks and see how easy it is to prepare.

With McCain's lip smaking products, anyone would enjoy a sumptuous food at home.

Have a look at http://www.mccainindia.com/  to choose what fits you best and don't worry about extra cholesterol.

The Human Touch

"Our times were much better when we grew up", claims my mother while I stare at my smart phone, without a blink, at the dining table than looking at the dishes on the plate, without appreciating the effort she has taken to prepare the food for me.

While I compare the my childhood days to the present day, there has been such a drastic advancement in the technology. No one could imagine, a smart phone could be smarter than you are and gain the control of your life. We have become slaves of the technology and truly admit the fact that life was simpler and "happier"during childhood days. What we miss is the "Real Togetherness" and the "Human Bonding" is seen in the form of emails, whatsapp, Facebook and Twitter updates.

A few years ago, I met a lady at Singapore MRT station who was kind and helped me reach the destination safe. After reaching my hometown, I sent her a postcard, thanking her. She has still preserved that card with so much care, that, I had forgotten about the card I sent. She wouldn't have been happier as much as receiving a postcard than receiving an email. That was the instance when I understood, how small gestures could make big difference in the mean world.

To me happiness lies in bringing people together.

  • Have dinner with family members and appreciate the food your mother or spouse has prepared for you. And make a note to turn off the TV during dinner.
  • Sipping coffee together and gossiping about movie stars.
  • Watching a movie at a Cinema Hall with friends.
  • Going for trek and hike together.
  • Invite your Neighbours home to catch a glimpse of dolls that your arranged during Dasara festival.
  • Send handmade greeting cards during the new year and festivals.
  • Arrange a potluck party at home and invite relatives and mandate that every family should get a dish of their choice.
  • Hold a book reading session, flip through the pages and bookmark the last read page using peacock feather.
  • Arrange for Garba on your terrace and try the new steps.
  • Attend a musical concert together.
  • Smile, everyday, when you see your acquaintance rather than looking at your phone.
  • Arrange a get together with your school and surprise your teacher that you still remember her, narrating all the incidents of punishments and how much you disliked standing outside am the class.
  • Go on a picnic, pack your favorite meal and share it with your group.
  • Go on weak or jog with your Neighbour everyday.
  • Watch an old golden movie like Sholay on your big screen, lights off, dolby sound, pop corn and Coke.
  • Go on a long drive together.
  • Lend your shoulders to a friend in distress, jaadu ki jappi is a great stress buster.

Last but the not the least, take time off from commenting, liking and stalking on Facebook. Before it is too late, get on your toes and start meeting old buddies and people who made a lasting impact on your life.

A thoughtful video from Kissanpur worth watching on how human touch has priceless value that technology can never buy.

Meryl had worked hard day and night and saved every penny for her big day. As the D day of her life approached, she was anxious and worried to find the best dress she always dreamed of. With her friend, Meryl would enter every store that sold wedding dress, on each street of her town and would leave the store disheartened. She wasn't able to find anything that was within her budget. She walked down the street and reached home, buried her head in her arms.

Mashi and Other Stories :: Book review

A couple of years ago, I stumbled upon Project Gutenberg and found a list of books penned by Rabindranath Tagore. The e-books were lying unnoticed until I stored them on my android tablet and begun reading.

Mashi and Other Stories is a collection of short stories in an elegant style that describes the lives of people, rich and poor, young and old, and how an incident becomes a turning point, which leaves behind a huge impact and scar.

The most interesting fact about Tagore's writing is that, every story has an ending which leads to two contradictory conclusions. What you infer is left is assumed to be true. This makes me adore the his works and I completed the book at a single go.

Skeptical, I am if I have interpreted the endings correctly, for each story is thought provoking.

Choosing the right ingredient

Choosing the right ingredient

A few years ago, I stayed away from my family in another country and this was the first time I was away from them. Having been a laadli beti, my mother never allowed me to do the household chores nor I had to worry about the cooking.

When I travelled overseas, I had taken with me the required utensils like pressure cooker, rice cooker, frying pan and other rasam, sambhar powder and chutney pudi. If I had to cook something, I would utilize the calling card which allowed me to talk as long as an hour and I would note down what vegetables, masala and kind of dal to prepare the food. My parents found it very funny when I would ask how that particular dal or leaf looked like. Is it a small dal or big dal, yellow or brown dal. What does leaf look like, when the integredients should be stirred. Should any water to be added or not? They would patiently answer all my questions.

I found cooking very interesting and expetimented whatever I could starting from lemon rice, believe me its the easiest to prepare with just Tadka, sprinkle lemon and mix rice and there you go. With the love for food, I learnt the South Indian, North Indian and Italian pasta and few other recipes. I was very happy that not only I learned what to add and how much quantity to prepare.

Back home, there are hectic times and lazy days where you get sick of eating the food you prepare or while you're home alone and no one to accompany you, you end up sleeping hungry or eating bread and jam.

While in a gang, going to restaurant and waiting for a table is again killer. You order a starter and main course and by the time, it arrives in front of you, the hunger dies.

When guests pop in during lunch without an invite, you are stuck as to what to cook last minute and can't even let them go. Once added more salt in a hurry and the guest couldn't eat the food at all.

TinyOwl is a fastest food ordering service in major cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Gurgoan and Pune, where you could order food from your Android or Apple device sitting at home. TinyOwl app provides a friendly user interface for browsing the recipe and restaurants, along with the chef details. I have installed the app on both android and apple devices and the navigation works fine. While you place an order, you can see the estimated delivery. And can search based on your current location.

If your lazy to cook breakfast, lunch and dinner or arranging a house party, or when guests pop in with a surprise. Just order the food on TinyOwl and enjoy your food for the day without worry.

Come, experience the fastest speed with Airtel 4G

What's the use of a high end smart when the internet connection you use doesn't come handy when you require it the most. I have been using high end devices like iPhone and Nexus for years now and found that the though the device supports latest LTE or the so called 4G connection, which is an upgrade to the existing 3G and most of the service providers had not launched it, all these years. Low speed internet is very annoying and we lose patience thinking we did we even spend so much on a high end phone. Or even throwing away your phone due to anger. I have faced this while using Google maps on phone boarding the auto rickshaw and taxi.  The app would still keep fetching the routes to the destination while I would have  reached the place asking the route from the passerby. The old auto's speed was much better than my internet speed and the auto driver would ask, "Your phone so slow? Still your phone doesn't show the destination".

Gone are the days when people would go home and download the movies, songs during the night since no one would internet. Now a days, everyone wants to download what they like just at a touch. Though I am not a movie buzz, I do watch and download the self learning video tutorials. The connection would sometimes disconnect and I had start the download again wasting so many MB and even GB many times ending up paying huge bills. :(

Finally, Airtel 4G is the first telecom operator to roll out 4G services in the country, with the best speed as LTE technology promised, nationwide rollout across 296 cities Airtel is offering 4G upgrade to their existing 3G customers free of cost at the same price as 3G connection. You can order and get a free 4G SIM card at your doorstep which is just a tweet away - #GetAirtel4G. That brings a wide smile on most of us. They are not only offering 4G connection for mobile users but also 4G wi-fi hotspot, 4G dongle and 4G wi-fi which is best suitable for home. It is definitely a blessing in disguise to the freelancers and travelers who share their experience via the social media on the go and have to meet the deadlines.

With so many options from Airtel to mobile users, on the go and home package. I would rather get connected to the WiFi, I can sit and Work From Home and finish off my work fast. Not only work from home, I can also work while I am traveling and with no risk of having the left over tasks. I am going to upgrade my plan to 4G connection soon.

Airtel is offering 4G plan to both postpaid and prepaid users. If you are a prepaid user use can still upgrade your plan to 4G. Find details here.

Airtel challenges to pay your mobile bills for free if you your network is faster. Are you ready for the challenge?

MY Cozy Little Room

Everyone dreams of owning a house these days and I dream of making my keeping my little cozy room clean and decorated as much as possible. I got my independent room solely for myself at 13 and ever since then its been my tiny tinsel world which has also served the purpose of guest room while I was away from home, partly store room to dump unused stuff. It's also been my music room where I practice my Veena, photographer's studio and reading room with over a hundred novels in the shelf. The more I try to arrange, I end up misplacing the stuff and end up wasting time searching for those items. I don't want to upload the picture of the room and scare you here. :)

Having visited my friends place and seen the latest interiors in the recent times, I wish my room would get a makeover to keep my valuable stuff organised and easily accessible, without having to search. The paint color on the wall, the curtains and the tiles on the floor should be matching and provide a soothing and a calming effect.

Godrej Interio offers interior designing with their professional designers who realize your needs and come up with best solution for your home. They would understand my need of maintaining the things organized, such as a separate space to keep my music instruments like Veena and Keyboard, shelf to hold all my books - both read and unread, my small photo studio which houses the photography gears, camera body and the special lights, a table which is well lit for study and I could stuff all my souvenirs which I collected during my travel, a wardrobe to arrange the clothes, jackets and shoes for all seasons and occasions. A space for my clothes stand and iron stand where I dry and press  all my clothes...and a nice dressing table where I can place the makeup Kit, hair dryer and other stuff. It is space saving and nice to have foldable chair when my friends visit me.

Apart from this I need space to hang my huge 32 inches TV on the wall such that I can watch my favorite movies lying down on the cot. An adjustable light to read books while going to sleep is a must to have. Apart from these I would like to hang my Cuckoo Clock which I bought as memorabilia without nailing the wall. I would also like to have my travel postcards on the wall without having to glue them.

I know its not a tiny wish but its NOT an impossible task when you have professional designers for Godrej Interio who can solve any thing harder than a puzzle.

RangiTaranga :: Kannada Movie Review

It's been ages I have watched a Kannada movie at a Cinema hall. Considering the quality of the Kannada movies, my interest was least and always preferred watching Kannada plays and TV serials though my mother tongue is Kannada.

The two movies were released on the same day  RangiTaranga and Bahubali across the entire state. Bahubali was my first choice seeing the trailers and moreover it was from the director of the previous hits which scored extremely at the box office: Magadheera and Eega. Bahubali faired well much beyond the audience expectation with the amazing settings and the well-woven screenplay and melodious music.

I watched RangiTaranga a week later, directed by entirely different crew. I wouldn't narrate the story here as I want you to watch the movie at a Cinema Hall and don't wish to be a spoil sport. The movie has lot of twists and twirls and you would cling on to the seat with your heart in your mouth until the truth is revealed. As the story continues, it leads to confusion but well connected and unfolds the hidden facts clearing the confusion. The director maintains the suspense until the end of the movie. The movie stars the newcomers Nirup Bhandari, Avantika Shetty and Radhika Chetan in the lead roles who have enacted well in their respective roles. It would be unfair if I don't mention Sai Kumar who adds spice to the story. The lyrics, music and the story theme go hand in hand. I loved all the songs written in "Achcha" Kannada words by the director, Anup Bhandari.

All in all, a must watch movie to all the Kannada and non-Kannada speakers as it makes you realize that good movies are made in Kannada, too. The audience would highly appreciate the screenplay, cinematography and the choreography.

Dharbaranyeswarar Temple :: Thirunallar

Thirunallar, located in Puducherry or earlier called Pondicherry, is a famous town known for Lord Shani and Shiva Temple. The temple has devotees visiting all round the year, especially on Saturdays and one has to wait for 3-4 hours in the queue to see the deity. It is believed as per Hindu myth, people who have their saade saati or Lord Shani's cycle going on, are advised to visit the temple to reduce or ward off the ill effects. It is said, Lord Nala Maharaja, got Moksha or salvation post visiting this temple.

Nala Theertham
Devotees are advised to take a dip in the Nala Theertha, a pond where King Nala, left the clothes he was wearing after taking a dip in the pond and wore new clothes after bathing in the pond. Lord Nala, was ruling the kingdom of Nishadha and underwent hardships and agony, during the Saturn's phase. He lost his kingdom, separated form his beautiful wife and reduced to the state of a servant or cook. During the end of Saturn's phase, he was able to retrieve the lost kingdom and his wife, Damayanthi.

I was here, to visit the temple,on a Saturday, after taking a dip in the pond and wearing new clothes, the same way King Nala did. While you walk towards the pond, you find many selling the oil along with soap, black towel, shampoo sachets and black towel. The oil is available in small packet for Rs 5-10 and to be applied on your head before taking a dip in the pond. While you dip, you will notice the statue of King Nala, after whom the pond is named.

There is a Ganesha temple near the pond and you would find devotees lighting a camphor on the coconut and breaking it. It is believed that the evils are warded off by doing so.

The Garbha Gudi or the main temple is a five minute walk from the pond. If you want the keep your luggage, there are plenty of cloak rooms and they would charge less than Rs 50. I would suggest you keep all the inexpensive belongings at the cloak room and carry your mobile phone and purse along. Note that the temple authorities do not allow your luggage.

Queue at the temple
At the temple premise, devotees maintain a disciplined queue. There are counters selling at "Archane" coupons, quick darshan for Rs 50 and Til oil lamps for Rs 5. You many offer flowers, oil to the deity, depending on our convenience. It is also said that you should see the deity only once unlike visiting other temples. Lord Shiva is named Dharbaranyeswarar since the idol is originated from Dharba, a special variety of grass. As per myth, Lord Shani's favorite deity is Lord Shiva.

AccommodationI did not feel a necessity for a room since you have to dip in the pond and there are change rooms available for women. And cloak rooms to park your luggage. Moreover, it was a one day visit and the need did not arise.

FoodThirunallar has a Saravana Bhavan, though not a branch of the Saravana Bhavan you see in big cities like Chennai. The veg meals are served on plantain leaf and cost Rs 60.
Never miss lemon soda which is sold across the street, to quench your thirst in the hot weather.

TransportIf you're traveling from Bangalore, the only bus to Thirunallar is run by SRS Travels at 10pm from Kalasipalya and reaches the destination by 10am. So that's truly a long journey on bus. Other options are, travel to Kumbakonam or Puducherry by train and then board a bus to Thirunallar, but you would end up  spending a lot of time traveling.
